EDUCATION FOR THE AZOREAN IMMIGRANT DESCENDANT: Selected Cases from the Summer Study Program at the University of the Azores. Abstract (2002)- The purpose of this study was to examine the insider’s view of experientially learning through study abroad in ones ancestral homeland in order to explore the factors leading to self understanding as well as reflection upon multicultural k12 curricula. This perspective is important because many of the individuals who create multicultural curricula never have experienced or listened to the voices of immigrant descendants to form frameworks in American k12 multicultural curricula. The research paradigm and form of inquiry is an emic, qualitative series of case studies of six second and third generation Azorean immigrant descendants who participated in the Curso Verão (summer study) program at the University of the Azores. Grounded in a postmodern theory of experiential learning outside the classroom, the phenomena of personal meaning through study abroad in ones ancestral homeland were investigated through a series of conversations, structured and unstructured interviews, and electronic correspondence with each of the study abroad participants, as well as, participant action review. Each interview focused on the personal experiences during and prior to the study abroad experience, that is, individual perceptions of the curriculum and extra-curricular activities, personal relationships to ancestral culture, and phenomenological conditions considered important to personal identity formation through study abroad curriculum. The sample included six second and third generation Azorean immigrant descendants who represent diversity in gender, geographic distribution, socioeconomic status, educational background, and cultural experience. All participants resided in the United States at the time this research was conducted. The research was triangulated with an open-ended questionnaire administered to participants in the summer study program. The data were analyzed using constant comparative analysis. The findings are reported in a series of narratives told from the perspective of the study abroad participants. Book Review:  We have just received a copy of the "Children's Illustrated Portuguese Dictionary" and were pleasantly surprised for such a initiative from Hipochrene, not just for its contents but for the fact that has been long overdue. Although the book is recommended for the young readers, ages 5-10, it would do no harm for anyone who is trying to get acquainted with the Portuguese language. In order for a child to use, an adult is necessary in order to help on the pronunciation, due to the usage of key pronunciation descriptive text. A person whose first language is Portuguese, found the pronunciation text very close to what is spoken in most Portuguese speaking countries. There are over 200 million people in the world who speak Portuguese, and certainly many more that would like to. This dictionary certainly helps. We wholeheartedly recommend every parent who has a child, to acquire one and on a daily basis to try to teach one or more words in the same manner as English is being learned. A child has a tremendous learning capability to learn foreign languages. This advantage should not be ignored. This will be quite helpful when the child lives in an area where the Portuguese is not being taught or classes are available. See below for more information on this book.

Comunidades/EUA: Portugueses no Vietname em livro de "emoções" e "traumas."

     Lisboa, 29 Mar (Lusa) - Portugueses no Vietname é o nome de um livro que revela emoções, medos e traumas de emigrantes que, por estarem radicados nos EUA, combateram e fisicamente "sobreviveram" à guerra que ainda hoje não os deixa dormir.
     Eduardo Mayone Dias, professor, e Adalino Cabral, ex-combatente, também residentes nos EUA, assinam a obra com publicação inicialmente prevista para Abril, mas que o vazio de apoios fez adiar para Novembro, apadrinhado pela editora luso-americana Peregrinação Publications.
     Pela primeira vez são revelados testemunhos de portugueses que combateram na guerra do Vietname, incluindo o próprio depoimento de Adalino Cabral, mas em forma de prefácio.     O livro, feito de conversas e cenários de guerra, mostra 16 depoimentos recolhidos pelos autores ao longo de vários anos e que acabou por se transformar num trabalho que na realidade começou com a guerra vietnamita.      Histórias de horrores, medos e traumas que ficaram para sempre são contados na primeira pessoa com Mayone Dias e Adalino Cabral a tentarem ser fiéis ao discurso oral, para "proporcionar ao texto a maior naturalidade possível".
     Testemunhos de portugueses residentes nos EUA, uns açorianos, outros continentais, e que, num acto de coragem, aceitaram "regressar" ao Vietname e enterrar naquele livro a sensação do iminente perigo de morte.
     Os autores, em entrevista à Agência Lusa, revelam o que sentiram, quando, de gravador na mão, se puseram a recolher histórias de Portugueses no Vietname, recuando no tempo para o explicar.     Mayone Dias chegou aos EUA nos últimos dias de 1961 e a guerra do Vietname começava a esboçar-se. Foi colocado como professor de Português numa escola de línguas do Exército, acabando por ter, como afirma, "oportunidade de presenciar a tensão do momento, a febril actividade com que se preparava o envio de elementos militares".
     "A guerra avolumou-se. Mas foi só de longe, em cenas de televisão, que presenciei o seu desenrolar. Foi necessário que tudo terminasse, que transcorresse um período de maturação para me dar verdadeiramente conta das apocalípticas proporções do que aconteceu", relembrou.     Para isso, explicou, contribuíram inúmeros livros e filmes, a comparação com as guerras coloniais portuguesas, as conversas com alunos que tinham passado pelo Vietname e a emocionada leitura que fez de poemas de um deles, que a explosão de uma mina tinha horrivelmente mutilado.     Ao fixar residência nos Estados Unidos foi obrigado, como todos os outros emigrantes do sexo masculino, a registar-se nos serviços de recrutamento e ao fazê-lo afirma ter sentido "uma longínqua apreensão em vez de receio.     Já para lá do meio da casa dos trinta, não seria provável que os EUA me recrutassem", disse.     Por outro lado, sublinhou "a análise de situações de guerra sempre me tinha interessado, apesar de nunca ter envergado uniforme militar, ou disparado um tiro ou sequer uma espingarda nas mãos".  O mesmo não aconteceu com Adalino Cabral, o outro autor, muito mais jovem, que se ofereceu para a Força Aérea, com a esperança de ser colocado nos Açores, mas acabou no mato do Vietname, em serviço de ligação com o Exército.  Dos 16 testemunhos, 14 foram recolhidos por Adalino Cabral sem contar com o seu próprio depoimento em forma de prefácio. "Cada entrevista foi outra guerra de almas penadas. Ao contar as suas experiências, os ex-combatentes sofreram e, naturalmente, eu também", disse. No papel de entrevistador Adalino Cabral referiu ter passado por 14 guerras, reviu-se em algumas situações e de uma forma geral identificou-se com todas elas.
     "Cerca de 60 mil indivíduos morreram no Vietname e mais de dois mil ainda não regressaram ao torrão dos EUA. Cerca de 200 mil suicidaram-se devido à guerra, durante ou depois do teatro de operações no Vietname. E mais de três milhões de vietnamitas perderam as vidas naquela tão vinagrosa guerra que parecia nunca ter fim", lamentou o ex-combatente.     Por isso, frisou, "para os combatentes da guerra do Vietname a luta terminou, mas a guerra continua...nas suas cabeças". Enquanto Adalino Cabral servia os EUA no Vietname, a guerra absorvia Mayone Dias pela via literária, embrenhando-o em várias narrativas sobre aquele conflito, frisando que leu quase tudo o que podia encontrar.
     "Sinto-me agora à vontade com o vocabulário e as circunstancias deste conflito. A gíria dos soldados, aprendida em páginas de ficção, já soa familiar", disse.  Por isso, justifica, não estranha que esporádicos contactos com portugueses nos EUA, que combateram no Vietname, "catalisassem o interesse por fixar no papel as suas experiências e emoções".     "Foi uma guerra com presença portuguesa e onde cerca de 100 militares com sobrenomes portugueses por lá tombaram para sempre", lamentou. Nesse sentido, sublinha, "pareceu aos dois autores, residentes nos EUA há longos anos, que seria valioso reunir testemunhos de outros emigrantes portugueses que tivessem servido a pátria adoptiva na Guerra do Vietname". E para além dos traumatismos a que está sujeito qualquer combatente, os autores tentaram determinar, nestas entrevistas, o grau de identificação sentidos pelos emigrantes portugueses ao serem incorporados nas forças armadas norte-americanas, com ideais do país de acolhimento.
     Segundo Mayone Dias, foi ainda objectivo perceber junto dos entrevistados como é que uma (im)possível rejeição ao recrutamento se poderia "coadunar com a lealdade à nova nação, que na maioria dos casos, uma fria ordem oficial os mandava defender". "Também tentámos saber até que ponto o sentido de dever os motivaria. E como reagiram quando se viram envoltos numa guerra distante, onde o perigo os cercava a cada momento", frisou à Lusa.  Tudo isto está no livro e, como exemplo, aquele autor aponta o caso de Amilcar Cerejo, natural de Leiria, que emigrou para a Califórnia com 16 anos e que, por heroísmo numa acção de combate no Vietname a 21 de Março de 1967, recebeu uma medalha de Bronze. Nessa acção foi ferido, tendo contudo continuado a combater.
     Treze meses no Vietname foram suficientes para perceber que lá já não era português, precisava diariamente de tentar salvar a vida e matar... andava lá por andar.
     Quando regressou aos EUA, o choque foi ainda maior porque, como testemunha no livro, sentia medo de si próprio, "com ideias a fugir para dentro" e as noites passadas a tentar salvar o sono. Para Mayone Dias, foi uma conversa impressionante, uma vez que a reacção daquele combatente aos eventos "revelou-se muito emocional", admitindo até ter ficado angustiado porque Cerejo pôs "muita intensidade na descrição dos sintomas do stress pós-traumático de que passou entretanto a sofrer".
     Este testemunho, sublinha o autor, ilustra atitudes manifestadas por outros entrevistados, como o inesperado da morte, a "calada revolta da hostilidade com que os antigos combatentes foram muitas vezes recebidos de regresso aos EUA e a impotência perante ordens insensatas dos superiores".
     "Também me impressionou o sentido de dever que os entrevistados expressaram.
     Foram para a guerra virgens de qualquer ideologia, sentiram a obrigação de cumprir o que o novo país lhes pedia, obedeceram como antes haviam obedecido ao patrão. Era mais um trabalho que havia que fazer", disse à Lusa.  Todos os entrevistados são, na sua maioria, oriundos de ambientes rurais, chegados à América do Norte na adolescência e apanhados pela guerra do Vietname entre os 19 e os 22 anos.
     De volta todos refizeram a sua vida, vários terminaram cursos universitários, um obteve doutoramento, mas isso não exclui que o quanto ainda sofrem de stress pós--traumático de guerra e isso está patente no livro. Uma obra que, diz Mayone Dias, não é sua: "tudo o que fiz foi empregar tesoura e cola para a organizar. O meu trabalho foi sobretudo transcrever, traduzir as entrevistas, que foram feitas em inglês, e organizar as notas". O livro levou cerca de dez anos até ficar pronto, tendo encalhado numa editora das Caldas da Rainha que, refere, "nunca atou nem desatou, até que decidimos contactar a Peregrinação Publications, que agora o vai publicar". Para além da publicação, a editora está também a preparar um convívio de veteranos lusos de todas as guerras, para 18 de Novembro de 2000, no Centro Comunitário Amigos da Terceira, em Rhode Island.
