Today, more than 130 years after their initial arrival to Churchill County and other areas of Northern Nevada from the Azores Islands and the mainland of Portugal, the Portuguese and their descendants have become business, agricultural and community leaders in many cities and counties.
A few months ago while having lunch in Carson City, I ran into an old friend, Marv Teixeira, the mayor of Carson City. I told him that my wife and I were planning a trip to Portugal and he said, "I'm of Portuguese descent,"
telling me that his family comes from Madeira, another Portuguese island off the coast of Portugal.
