Luso-American Foundation awards $10,000 to the Summer Program in Portuguese April 10, 2009 – Dartmouth, MA. The UMD Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture announces a $10,000 grant from the Luso-American Foundation of Lisbon for the 16th Annual Summer Program in Portuguese (July 6-August 5, 2009). The grant will help underwrite not only a considerable number of partial scholarships for students, but also the Summer Concert Series, which brings local Portuguese, Brazilian and Cape Verdean musical groups to campus, and the Lecture Series, which allows academics from other universities to contribute to the intellectual life of the Program. This year’s course offerings include intensive Portuguese language instruction at the elementary, intermediate and advanced levels, as well as an advanced undergraduate/graduate seminar entitled “Transatlantic Passages in Lusophone Literatures and Cultures.” The Summer Program is also offering for the first time an intensive course in Cape Verdean Language and Culture. Club of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania awarded two scholarships to
Danielle dos Santos and Diana Henriques. The funds were obtained thanks to the annual golf
tournament which raises thousands of dollars for these and other community purposes.
Danielle will be attending East Stroudsburg University and Diana Henriques plans to go to
